inFORM Decisions Green Policy

From the desk of Dan Forster – President

Subject: Open Letter on IFD Green Policy

As many inFORM Decisions clients already know, our company has been researching a long-term Green Policy since 2007. We have learned a lot from this effort and hope to share some of our findings on our IFD Green Page.

Our company is committed to the protection of our environment and conservation of our increasingly scarce resources. As a company, we are beginning to make the simple changes that can contribute to the protection of our fragile planet for the enjoyment of future generations. As research is showing, it’s also smart business.

We are committed to change in eight areas described in our IFD GreenManifesto™.

Commitment #1: Pitch the Plastic – The plastic items we eliminated included water bottles, knives and forks, Styrofoam containers, disposable drinking glasses, and coffee stirrers. Recycling plastic bottles can divert the 40 million plastic bottles produced in the U.S. from heading to the dump.

Commitment #2: Kill the Commute – Our employees and managers voted to telecommute, working out of their homes. We keep a small office available for occasional meetings. Sun’s work-at-home program has saved their employees time and money, and decreased the carbon output for the company.

Commitment #3: Support a Conservation Organization – We selected a short list to support from the many organizations helping to preserve our forest resources, since old growth forests are still being harvested for paper mills around the world. Among these, the Arbor Day Foundation, the Nature Conservancy, and Conservation International were our favorites.

Commitment #4: Cut the Power – We don’t just switch off the lights. We turn off all those electronic wait states that silently suck power by controlling them via power strips. IBM has developed a whole new generation of servers and storage devices that conserve power and reduce heat, as part of their Project Big Green.

Commitment #5: Go with the Green Guys – We decided to work with ecologically sensitive vendors that operate with some level of environmental awareness. We now provide biodegradable inks and recycled toner cartridges and paper, working with suppliers of these and other greener products.

Commitment #6: Change Mindset, Change Habits – Each of us is continually on the lookout for new opportunities that can help to preserve scarce or threatened plant, animal and mineral resources. Starting a recycling program with other people in your building is a good example … so is carpooling (the switch to working out of our homes eliminated it in our case).

Commitment #7: Preach Going Paperless – We’ve taken our software business to another level by going paperless. Being in the business of eliminating paperwork and clutter has given us a slight edge. We converted paper forms and reports to electronic versions, enabling us to eliminate printers and ink cartridges and file cabinets and whole dumpsters full of office detritus that ends up in our landfills. We also have boosted our budget for getting the word out about the value of going to a paperless environment.

Commitment #8: Green the IT – In our case, we replaced older PCs and monitors in our server room with newer Energy Star equipment running on Intel processors. We also replaced our aging AS/400 170 and 270 models with a single System i Model 820 with multiple LPARs. Then we replaced our aging analog phone system and hardware with a VOIP computer-based phone system hosted remotely. The result: Our electric bill shrank by 17.5 percent and we increased our server room AC setting from 68F to 73F.

At IFD, we understand the need for developing sound business reasons for organizations to make the conversion to a paperless environment. When a company goes paperless … everyone wins. We call it greening the bottom line.

We are using our IFD Green Page to show other companies how to make changes in their IT and office operations that save time and money and lead to protection of our forest resources.

Below you will find the IFD Green Policy that guides us today.

You will also find our IFD Green Research Links, compiled to assist business and non-profit organizations, families and individuals to research how they can best contribute to the challenges that lie ahead. This compilation of over 200 references is organized into subject areas for both business (see: The Green Office and IT Goes Green) and other sections for families to research together (see Endangered Species, Do Your Own Research, Videos).

IFD Green Policy

The management and employees of inFORM Decisions are committed to making a strong contribution to the betterment of our environment. To this end, the company has created this IFD Green Policy.

IFD and its employees are committed to the following:

1. Examine our Own Operations

Identify and implement changes to operating practices designed to minimize any harmful impact on our forests and other natural resources.

2. Support Clean Energy Legislation

Support the U.S. House of Representatives bill HR 3221-New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act. This bill and a similar bill in the Senate represent important bipartisan efforts in the U.S. Congress towards a comprehensive clean energy Policy and our efforts to stop pollution and protect the environment. On July 30, 2008, the President signed this bill and it became Public Law No: 110-289.

The renewable standard requires that 15 percent of our electricity come from clean and renewable sources by 2020 and requires that part of this energy come from efficiency improvements.

3. Promote Use of Electronic Documents

Support the shift from paper documents to electronic documents. This is being done at IFD with the expansion of the company’s product line of document automation software designed to replace paper documents with eDocuments for a wide variety of uses throughout the enterprise. More eDocs mean less paper and less pressure on our forests.

4. Promote Awareness of Energy Conservation

The company and its employees are actively seeking ways to expand public awareness of the need for energy-consciousness. IFD has committed its website and other means of communication to this effort.

5. Support Forest Conservation

The company and its employees have identified the following forest conservation organizations for support. The goals of these organizations are in alignment with the IFD Green Policy at inFORM Decisions and support the protection of both old growth and newer forest resources.

More Green Tips

Send us your tips. They may show up on the IFD Green Page with acknowledgement to you.

Saving Energy
Become aware of the many subtle ways you are using electricity. Power down your computer if you won’t be using it for a while. Unplug appliances that don’t need to be plugged in all the time. Unplug the cell phone charger and other chargers in your home and office until needed.

Use power strips to make it easier to shut off all power to multiple devices at once. This eliminates the phantom load that most offices and homes have where electricity is used even when devices are turned off to keep status lights beaming or some other nonessential activity. If you don’t need it to operate 24/7, find a way to make shutting things off easy.

Green Living Factoids

With power costs at all-time highs, going green is no longer a luxury it’s becoming a necessary competitive strategy. The short factoids in this section can help. Please send us your tips. They may show up on the IFD Green Page with acknowledgement to you!

Some background information:

  • Earth’s original global forests covered 15 billion acres; about 9 billion are still standing.
  • By 2050, more than half the world’s industrial wood will be destined for the paper mill.
  • U.S. consumes 6.5 million chords of wood plus 4 billion pounds of paper and pulp annually.
  • Catalog Choice estimates 53 million trees are used to produce 19 billion catalogs mailed to Americans.
  • European, Japanese and American people consume more than 60% of the world’s manufactured forest products

Some further research…

This released by strategy firm Javelin:

…although most consumers expressed an interest in adopting green banking behaviors, three out of four consumers still receive paper statements. (However), if every U.S. household stopped receiving paper bills and statements, 687,000 tons of paper would be saved every year enough to circle the Earth 239 times.

Another recent report released by research and strategy firm Javelin:

Among the key findings, 43% of consumers said they are more likely to do business with companies they perceive to be green.

American Solar Energy Society found renewable energy and energy-efficient industries were responsible for the creation of nearly 8.5 million jobs in 2006; expected to be 40 million jobs by 2030.

Health Data Management reports if the population would switch just 10% of its total mileage to scooters, consumption would be 1418 million gallons less in fuel per day and carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 324 million pounds per day as well.”

Factoids/tips follow…

Conserve electricity by turning off lights and appliances while not in use; use power cord surge strips.

Potted plants provide clean and oxygenated air. These help to clean the air in your office and home. You can choose decorative varieties or grow more useful plants that don’t mind being indoors, such as herbs for cooking.

Use crayons or wax pencils instead of solvent-based markers; use refillable pens and pencils rather than disposable ones.

Bring lunch in reusable containers.

Faucet aerators at work save water.

Buy only one copy of the newspaper for all staff to share.

A tree shading your air conditioning unit can increase its efficiency by 10 percent.

Laptops use less power than desktop computers but heat up faster and can not run as long safely.

Use glass bottles over plastic. Glass is highly recyclable.

Green Cleaning Tips

Vinegar is one of the great non-toxic cleaning supplies most people have in their homes. Here are some ways you can use it in your kitchen.

Microwave Soak a cloth with vinegar. Microwave on high for 15 seconds. Once you can handle the cloth, it can be used to wipe the now-loosened splatters.

Coffee and tea stain removal Combine vinegar and table salt in equal portions. These will enable you to rub the stains right off the cups.

Coffeemaker Buildup Run 1 cycle of cold water mixed with 1/4 cup of vinegar. Repeat with water only. If you can still smell vinegar, repeat again.

Degrease Oven Vents Use a sponge soaked in vinegar to remove grease from the vents of your oven hood. Do about twice a year. A paste of baking soda and vinegar works even better.

Mildew Inside Refrigerator Limit mildew buildup inside the refrigerator by wiping down the refrigerator door seals with vinegar.

3rd Club of Rome Report

Our Future Economy: Money and Sustainability the Missing Link

Editors: Bernard A. Lietaer, Brussels, Belgium and Stefan Brunnhuber, Wuerzburg, Germany
German edition, 2009
Some of the Editors’ personal remarks include:

In the long run, planet Earth will be sustainable; what is undecided is how much of our species and our present global civilization will be part of it. The trillion-dollar question becomes whether we can change proactively, using wisely our knowledge about monetary tools, or whether we have to wait until external events force us to change.

In 1972, the first Report to the Club of Rome, Limits to Growth, drew the attention of the world to the issue of sustainability. Its conclusions: If the present growth trends in world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion continue unchanged, the limits to (physical) growth on this planet will be reached sometime within the next one hundred years. The most probable result will be a rather sudden and uncontrollable decline in both population and industrial capacity. The Report, received with much opposition at the time, has had two updates, Beyond the Limits in 1992, and the most recent report in 2005, Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update. The two updates both confirmed the first decade of the Twenty-first Century could still be a period of growth — as did the mathematical models and scenarios in the first report in the early 70s — but that sustainability problems will manifest increasingly in the first decades of this new century.

Bernard Lietaer told us that the Third Report to the Club of Rome, published initially in German, should be out in English in Spring, 2009.
